Make a flower posy

Share your flowers or make a display by creating a simple flower posy – or ‘tussie mussie’

Flower posy

What you'll need

  • Selection of cut flowers and herbs (if you have them)
  • Scissors
  • Garden twine
  • Decorative ribbons (optional)
  • Vase or container for water
Suggested flowers: cosmos, cornflower, sweet pea, calendula, gypsophila, larkspur, ranunculus, zinnia, scabiosa

Suggested herbs: chives, lavender, rosemary, mint, thyme, sage

What to do

  1. For best results, collect your cut flowers in the morning when their stems are fully turgid (filled with water)
  2. Cut your selection of flowers, removing lower leaves from each stem. Cut the stems at a slant and if possible, at the same length
  3. Place your flowers in vase of clean water for 2-3 hours before arranging - this ensures they have taken in water
  4. Gather your flowers and herbs in your hand, positioning the stems how you would like the posy to be arranged – use foliage and bigger flowers as a base before adding smaller flowers
  5. Tie your posy together by wrapping garden twine around it, and add a decorative bow from ribbon if you wish
  6. Make sure you or the recipient of your posy places it in a vase of water to help it last longer
