Make and decorate salt dough shapes

What you'll need

  • A mug

  • Mixing bowl

  • Wooden spoon

  • Plain flour

  • Salt

  • Water

  • Vegetable oil

  • Food colouring/food essences

  • Glitter

  • Poster paint

  • Paint brushes

What to do

  1. Measure two mugs full of flour and one mug full of salt and put them in your mixing bowl.

  2. Fill the mug 3/4 full of water and add this to the mixture.

  3. Add a tablespoon of vegetable oil.

  4. Stir the mixture with your spoon or with your hands until it forms dough. If your dough is too crumbly, add a bit more water. If it is too sticky, add a bit more flour.

  5. Knead the dough to make it smooth and elastic.

  6. You can add food colouring, essences or glitter to your dough to make it colourful – try making doughs of different colours.

  7. If you keep the dough in a tied polythene bag, it won’t dry out.

  8. Now the fun bit – mould the dough with your hands or roll it our flat and cut out shapes using a cookie cutter or make your own models.

  9. Leave your dough to dry on a flat surface for about 2 days until they are hard.

  10. When they are dry, you can decorate your salt dough shapes using poster paint.
